Obituary of John C. Brittain

John “Jake” C. Brittain, 85, of Indialantic, FL died Thursday, July 1, 2021 after a brief illness. Jake loved his God, his family, and his country. He was ready to go home and check off the last and best thing on his bucket list: see Jesus in Heaven.

 

He was born on February 4, 1936 in Inman, SC, youngest son of the late T. C. and Belle Brown Brittain. 

 

Jake was a 1954 graduate of Inman High School and attended Georgia Tech. He proudly served his country in the U. S. Navy on the USS Wisconsin. As a third generation builder, Jake spent his entire life in the construction industry. He worked for his father, with his brother, and then founded his own company. He also worked at Burris Construction, Columbia, SC and later at Rice-Cleveland Construction of Greenville, SC.

 

Jake was formerly active at First Baptist Church North Spartanburg and Berea Baptist Church, while he lived in SC. On his move to Florida, he joined Riverside Baptist Church and as always, was there when the door was open. 

 

He is survived by the mother of his daughters, Marilyn H. Royal, his daughters: Deborah Salyer of Ohio and husband Roger, and their son, Jordan (Kim), Cindy Painter and husband Mike with whom he spent his last years, and their children: Travis Butler (Jennie), Brandon Hamilton, Nick Hamilton (Caitlynn) and Emily Hamilton, and by stepdaughter Michelle Carter and husband Ken and their children: Adison and Gray of Taylors, SC. He is also survived by his granddaughters, Becky and Ashley, from his daughter, the late Jennifer Holland and his brother, Rev. Thomas N. Brittain, of Myrtle Beach.  

 

He is predeceased by his wife, Lillie (Buddie) Chapman Brittain, of Greenville, stepson, the late Lee Chapman and his brother William W. (Bill) Brittain.  Jake also had 13 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, many cousins, and other relatives and friends he treated like family.

 

A Celebration of Life will be held at Riverside Baptist Church, Indialantic, FL at 2:00 PM on July 17. Jake will be laid to rest at Cape Canaveral National Cemetery in Mims, FL.

 

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Legacy Fund at Berea Baptist Church, Greenville, SC or Riverside Missionary Fund, Indialantic, FL.
