Obituary of Mary E. Martin Mathews

Mary Martin Mathews, age 86, of Suntree passed away April 11, 2017, at the Viera Hospital after suffering from heart failure for three years. She was born in Winston-Salem, N.C. and raised in Alexandria, Virginia where she married.  She had a generous and loving heart and such strength and fortitude to have raised three successful children on her own.  She was a good Christian lady and made sure her children attended church. She was a smart, stylish woman both on the inside and outside.  She worked in the Pentagon before marrying USAF Colonel Don Mathews and moving to Hawaii on assignment where she learned the game of golf.  They moved to Florida after retiring in California, joined Suntree Country Club in 1978 where she was very active in all the games and tournaments, winning numerous times. She was tournament director for the Ladies Group at one time when there were 300 members in the group. She posted the low gross score for men and women when the first 9 golf holes were opened at IRCC; she and Don currently hold number 6 at the IRCC. She is survived by her husband, Don, of 46 years; daughters Sandra (Cliff) Perrin of Vienna, Virginia and Mary P. Smith of Owings Mills, Maryland; son, Richard A. Weinberg, CPA, (Karen) of Springfield, Virginia; step-son David Mathews of Oceanside, California. She is also survived by sister Juanita Zadell of Manassas, Virginia; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.  The family expresses their sincere appreciation for the Health First nurses who were so kind, concerned, compassionate, and efficient during this time: Home Health Care nurse RoseMarie; Viera ER nurse Tandy; and Viera Hospital ICU nurse Heather. Service will be at Suntree United Methodist Church, 7400 N. Wickham Road, Suntree, FL at 11:00 am on Thursday, April 20th. No flowers, please.
