John Trent

Obituary of John Fred Trent

John Fred Trent, 78, of Cocoa, Florida, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, February 26, 2018, surrounded by his loving family. John was born in Fort Blackmore, Virginia—God’s country—on November 15, 1939 to Earl and Ruth McConnell Trent. John moved to Florida in 1958, where he met the love of his life, Jo. They were married in 1960 and had two children. John worked at Pan Am and Sears, and retired from Sears as a salesperson after 40 years of dedicated service. He happily became a snowbird after retirement and enjoyed spending summers in Virginia. He was an avid amateur radio enthusiast and talking on his Ham radio brought him hours of joy. He loved watching sports and attending Tampa Bay Rays and Lightning games with family and friends. He was a member of Fort Blackmore Methodist Church in Virginia, and regularly attended the Open Door: A United Methodist Community Church in Cocoa. He looked forward to Saturday morning breakfasts at the Dixon Diner with the men’s group from church, and also spent time volunteering at the church’s thrift store each week. John loved the Lord, loved life and loved people. He never met a stranger and was genuinely interested in knowing everything he could about a person and ensuring they were saved. He was a true southern gentleman, with a kind, generous heart. By far his greatest love was his family, and nothing brought him more happiness than everyone gathered around his table—be it for one of Jo’s amazing meals or a game of cards or dominoes. He was predeceased by his parents and brothers, Dr. Joe Trent and Jimmy Trent. He will be greatly missed by his lovely wife of 57 years Glenna “Jo” whom he cherished; his children Timothy (Karen) Trent and Mary (Don) Enoch; his beautiful granddaughters Taylor (Dean) Legge, and Olivia, Adrien and Riley Enoch; and many special nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law, cousins and friends who loved him dearly. A celebration of his incredible life will be held at The Open Door: A United Methodist Community Church, 825 Forrest Ave., Cocoa, Florida, on Saturday, March 3. Visitation will be at 11:00 a.m., with services at noon followed by a reception at the church. A memorial and graveside service will be held in Fort Blackmore, Virginia this summer. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Open Door Church in memory of John.
