Obituary of Joy Dauble Cole

Joy D. Cole, 83, of Sunnyland Beach passed away September 11, 2014, after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. Born in Omaha Nebraska in 1931, Joy lived in Miami for 60 years. After graduating from Miami High School in 1947, she worked for the FBI. She married her high school sweetheart James Merrill Cole in 1951. Through the years they raised 3 children and a host of pets. A devoted volunteer, Joy gave her time to Coral Gables Jr. WomanGÇÖs Club as president, and to the Museum of Science Guild, where she worked with Jack Horkheimer in the planetarium. As volunteers at Fairchild Tropical Garden, Joy and Jim created and helped operate the Rain Forest Caf+¬. They served delicious food to visitors and staff for over 12 years and developed a large crew of volunteers to help. An active sailor and boater, she was a member of the Ladies Sailing Club at Coral Reef Yacht Club. After moving to Brevard County in 1994, Joy spent many hours as a Sebastian Inlet Park Ranger volunteer, a McClarty Museum guide, and a Barrier Island Center volunteer. Proud to be a PEO sorority sister, a BSO Guild member, a Haven Guild volunteer, Joy was also active in the New Neighbors Club of South Brevard, and the Island Garden Club . As a Supporter of the Marine Resource Council, Lagoon House, and the Turtle Preservation Society, Joy was also an active member of the local Right Whale Watching Group. She loved living close to nature in Sunnyland Beach. She turned her backyard into a pollinator sanctuary. She delighted in her butterfly garden and tended an enormous collection of orchids. She loved the birds (Hank the Heron), porpoises, manatees, and turtles. Joy amazed her family, many friends, and neighbors with her zest for life and adventure. For the past four years she traveled the world with her loving companion, Phil Segnitz . Phil brought a sparkle to JoyGÇÖs eyes and reminded us that the greatest power of all –love– can happen at any age if we are open to it. She is survived by her sister Diane Waller (Ken),daughters Phyllis Fevrier(Fred) and Diane Chasick (Doug), son Jim Cole(Susan), grandson James Cole(Alyssa), nephew Rob Branch, and loving companion Phil Segnitz. A deep and special thanks to the Hospice nurses who gave comfort to Joy and her family during the difficult last days of her life.
