Obituary of John V. Hughes

John V. Hughes Jr. died peacefully in Glenbrooke At Palm Bay – Senior Living on January 9, 2015, in Palm Bay, FL surrounded by his family. He was 81. Mr. Hughes was born on September 5, 1933, in Washington, D.C., to his parents John and Ethel Hughes. He attended Bulles Prep. for HS. He graduated from Shepherd College with a degree in Political Science in 1957. He married Temple Anne Scafati in 1955. The Hughes’s started their marriage living in West Virginia. Mr. Hughes began working for Exxon USA in Maryland. He served the company for 35 years and retired as a Director of Operations while living in Memphis, TN. After retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Hughes relocated to Palm Bay, Florida. Mr. Hughes served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. He was a dedicated employee and an avid golfer. He was a member of American Legion Post 117 and loved the beach, traveling, and was an enthusiastic football fan. A loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather, Mr. Hughes is survived by his wife Temple Anne Hughes (nee Scafati); his daughter and son-in-law Barbara and Peter Mazzone of W. Melbourne, FL; his daughter Catherine Weidman of West Chester, PA; his son and daughter-in-law John and Jacqueline Hughes of Palm Bay, Florida; his daughter and son-in-law Carole and Norman Parlett of Bel Air, MD; and his daughter and son-in-law Jennifer and Christopher Chatman of Stone Ridge, VA; his nine grandchildren Michael Parlett of Joppa, MD; Jacqueline Weidman Obernoltzer of West Chester, PA; Kevin Parlett of Bel Air, MD; Cristina Mazzone Chavarriaga of Orlando, FL; Joseph Weidman of San Francisco, CA; Tyray Cole of Palm Bay, Liam Chatman of Stone Ridge, VA; Colin Chatman of Stone Ridge, VA; Caroline Chatman of Stone Ridge, VA; and his great-granddaughter Madison Engle of Joppa, MD. Mr. Hughes is preceded in death by is parents, John and Ethel Hughes; his son-in-law Gregory Weidman; and his brother-in-law Tony Scafati. Arrangements entrusted to Ammen Family Cremation and Funeral Care, Palm Bay, FL 724-2222. Calling hours will be Wednesday, January 14, 2015 beginning at 12 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 5310 Babcock Street, NE, Palm Bay, FL 32905, followed by his Funeral Mass 2:00 pm.
