Obituary of Jan Henry Misitis

Jan Henry Misitis, 73, of West Melbourne, passed away on Wednesday, February 5, 2014. He was born to Mary Amelia Henrietta Hryniszak and Frank Joseph Misitis on November 2, 1940 in Pittsburgh, PA. He grew up in Pittsburgh and attended Duquesene University, University of Miami and Florida International University. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1961. In 1966, he graduated from officer’s candidate school. He served in Korea, Vietnam, Thailand and Panama. He was very proud of his military service and his time in Special Forces. Jan and Mary Mangan were married in the Panama Canal Zone in 1977. He retired in 1981. His favorite activities were digging for antique bottles, diving and wood carving. In 1985, Jan and Mary moved to Miami and lived there for over 25 years. During that time, Jan taught history in Miami-Dade High Schools. Upon retirement, Jan and Mary continued to live in Miami, until July 2013, when they moved to West Melbourne. During his last few years, Jan struggled with Alzheimer’s disease. He is survived by his wife Mary; two brothers, Frank and his wife, Lois of Pittsburgh, PA; Paul and his wife, Lois of West Hickory, PA; his sister, Carol Misitis of Pittsburgh; three step-children, Susan DeMoss, Cheryl Neil and Lisa DeMoss; two grandchildren, David and Steven Wang; and several nieces and nephews. He was loved by all of his family and will be greatly missed by his wife, family and friends. Arrangements entrusted to Ammen Family Cremation and Funeral Care, Melbourne, 724-2222.Services will be held privately for the family.
